How to Check Coolant Level

Coolant Car Check
Coolant plays a big role in your car’s performance, but just what is coolant and why does it matter so much? Coolant is a fluid that helps regulate the temperature of your engine components. It is designed to resist freezing below 32 degrees or overheating beyond 212 degrees Fahrenheit, so when your fluid levels run low, your engine performance can be compromised. Find out all about how to check your coolant level at home in Ridgeland and when to stop by the service department with help from Mazda of Jackson.

Where Is My Coolant Stored?

If you want to learn how to check your coolant levels for the first time, we recommend grabbing your owner’s manual. This will help you orient yourself once you pop the hood. Once you’ve got your manual in hand, make sure your engine is cool and take a look.

  • Find the coolant reservoir and observe the marking on the side.
  • Find the “Full” marking line. If your coolant levels reach this line, you are done.
  • If your coolant levels fall under the line, you’ll need to add more fluid.
  • Remove the radiator cap and use a funnel to add more coolant carefully.
  • Be sure to read the directions of your coolant formula to see if it is pre-mixed or if you need to mix it with water yourself.
  • Double check the hoses on your radiator for leaks and damage.
  • Close the hood.

What Are Red Flags?

Coolant is generally a thin fluid that is thicker than water, but flows more than motor oil. If your coolant appears sludgy or thick, it’s time to schedule your service. This could indicate an internal gasket leak, which leads to coolant draining quickly – leaving your engine vulnerable to overheating and damage.

When Should I Change Coolant?

As part of your regular maintenance schedule, you’ll need to change your coolant just like your motor oil or transmission fluid. Your technician will check your coolant levels and condition during your maintenance appointment, but you can also keep an eye on your fluid when you complete your DIY checks in Madison. Coolant colors range from blue to green to yellow to red, so know what color is normal for your vehicle. If you notice it’s changed to a darker or colorless hue, it’s time for a fluid flush.
